A Solar-Powered Plane Takes Flight

frontsolar_impulse5-thumb-550x366-36777

The energy of the sun brings many benefits to us as we live on the Earth. Solar power is natural instead of man-made, so its supply has fewer limitations. The energy itself is free for access and can be harnessed with the right equipment. Finally, since it’s natural energy, using it won’t directly result in further pollution to our planet. Solar power has been used for electronic devices like batteries and battery chargers. Researchers have also been trying to apply solar energy to other purposes such as powering vehicles. Now a fully-functioning, human-piloted plane has been developed that runs on solar power.

This plane was created by a team in Switzerland called Solar Impulse, which is led by a man named Bertrand Piccard. This aircraft is powered by about 12,000 solar cells, 882 pound, rechargeable lithium batteries and four electric engines. The engines are capable of producing forty horsepower and the plane can reach an average speed of forty-four miles per hour. It also has a wingspan of two hundred feet and completed its first flight at a height of 5,500 feet yesterday for an hour and a half. The project of this aircraft has been active since December and it was financed by an investment of seventy euro-million.

The team at Solar Impulse plans to take a trip around the world in their solar plane during 2012. Now with the first successful flight of their creation, Piccard and his team are determined to prove that world travel in a plane is possible without using conventional fuel. According to the solar plane’s test pilot Markus Scherdel, the aircraft isn’t capable of performing maneuvers in flight but it flies similar to a passenger jet. Of course, the plane is mostly dependent on solar energy but Piccard plans to use the lithium batteries to keep it operational at night. Thus, Solar Impulse is making preparations for their ambitious trip in 2012. It is fascinating that a solar plane the same size as a Boeing 747 is now capable of sustained flight. This could be the dawn of a new era in which solar power would become standard for all vehicles.

The Nightlight For Star Wars Fans Of Any Age

lightsaberwalllight-thumb-550x310-36793

For those of you who like science fiction, picture this. Intense space battles between Tie fighters and X-wing planes, members of the Rebel Alliance trading blaster bolts with Imperial stormtroopers in a firefight and epic confrontations of Jedi knights versus warriors of the Sith. Of course, I’m talking about the legendary Star Wars trilogy. Like you’re like me, being a fan of these classic films since childhood, then you probably had some private moments when you picked up a flashlight and pretended that you were wielding a lightsaber. Seriously, what Star Wars fan as a child hasn’t wanted to be a Jedi knight? Well, a toy company called Uncle Milton Industries has made a real taste for you!

They actually created a nightlight that is designed to look like a lightsaber. This nifty do-dad of Star Wars memorabilia comes with a remote control, it can be mounted on a wall and you have the option of choosing from a selection of seven colors to adjust the light with. It’s definitely quite an enticing find for memorabilia collectors and hardcore fans of the movie series. However, consumers, especially younger ones must remember that this is only a nightlight, not the elegant weapon of a more civilized age that it’s based on. Wielding it as a weapon is absolutely not recommended.

The nightlight is currently available for pre-order at Big Bad Toy Store.com. It will only cost you twenty-five dollars and it’s scheduled for release during the third quarter of the year. So rejoice, Jedi enthusiasts, you could become the proud owner of your very own lightsaber.
